Wachau Valley 2001

July 2001

THE DANUBE – WACHAU VALLEY

The Blue Danube is not blue but it is beautiful, especially in the area of the Wachau Valley. Rolling hills with vineyards and crumbling castles line the river and their special Marille! Marille are what they call their type of apricot and they make so many things with it and even have a festival! My favorite is the Marillenbrand which is like a brandy or schnapps. I always take home a bottle of this and serve it at dinner parties.

The beautiful Melk Abbey is close to the town of Dürnstein where we stayed at the castle hotel.

Matthausen

July 2001

This was a sobering stop outside of Linz. Mauthausen was a concentration camp during WWII and was known for the Stairway to Death where prisoners were forced to carry heavy stone blocks up 186 stairs from the quarry.

Salzburg 2001

July 2001

Definitely my favorite country in all of Europe! I keep coming back here again and again and never tire of it. My favorite is the Saltzkammergut or Lake District in English, rolling green hills, gorgeous sparkling lakes, and spa towns with hot springs. If you’ve seen the Sound of Music then you know how beautiful this area of the world is. This trip was part of our honeymoon in 2001.

SALZBURG

Ready to go to the Marionette Theater to see Mozart’s Zauberflote.

St. Peter’s Abby is so pretty!

Wengen/Grindelwald/Interlaken

July 1991

A pedestrian only town that is a perfect location for skiing in the winter or gorgeous green hikes in the summer. I loved just sitting on the balcony reading, I read Gone With the Wind during my time here in 2001. It is also a great spot for visiting the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Interlaken and up to the Jungfraujoch. You can see the three major mountains, Jungfrau, Eiger and Monch. Grindelwald is a gorgeous little town on the slopes and one you must stop and visit.

Wengen

Jungfraujoch was freezing even though it was July!

Nice little outdoor cafe in Grindelwald, the mountain almost looks fake!

I found Edelweiss!!

Ascona

July 1991

No one believes that there are palm trees in Switzerland but there are in Ascona. It is a pretty town right on Lake Maggiore and borders Italy, the Ticino region. It is not far from Lake Como and just as pretty. There is an amazing blend of Swiss and Italian cuisine that I really enjoyed.

Dachau

April 1999

Dachau concentration camp was the first of the Nazi concentration camps opened in 1933, intended to hold political prisoners. It is not far from Munich, Bavaria, southern Germany.

I didn’t take many pictures, it was more about the experience and the feeling you get while there. You definitely feel the heaviness of the suffering and death. You come away different, it’s not a site you enjoy but one you must visit.
